Harmony Climate Action Team (CAT)
Who we are...
The Climate Action Team of Harmony United Church is focused on bringing together concerned individuals who wish to learn more about combating climate change in meaningful ways.
At Harmony United Church our mission statement proclaims in part “as we seek peace and justice for all creation.” As we seek to express justice as a central value one of our program priorities is climate change and the justice challenges it presents.
In the Climate Action Team, our primary purpose is: to provide education and opportunities to take positive actions to respond to the challenges of
climate change.
CAT has grown out of a major concern over the climate crisis among members within Wesley United. When Wesley and Sunset United churches amalgamated in 2024 Dan Beveridge and others decided to continue meeting as a group on an monthly basis.
The focus of CAT at Harmony is still developing. Several initiatives have begun, including plans to help the Property committee seek funding to convert its gas-powered lawn and snow-blowing equipment to electric, while encouraging other Regina congregations to take similar steps.
Dan Beveridge
Co-founder of the Harmony's Climate Action Team
Dan was born and raised in rural Saskatchewan, living in various towns and villages as a 'preachers kid'. During studies at the University of Saskatchewan, he was student minister at Whitecap Dakota First Nation for two years. After graduation he worked as an educator with co-operatives, with farmers in Congo-Kinshasa, and as university extension programmer and professor. He has been involved with KAIROS Regina for many years. He is married with spouse Angelina, two adult children and three grandchildren. Now retired, he enjoys cycling and gardening.
Climate change is arguably the most significant problem facing the Earth and all its creatures, present and future generations. Predicted global temperature increases of over two degrees by 2099 will make many parts of the Earth uninhabitable for human and beast. The GHGs (greenhouse gas) emissions responsible were produced mainly by the rich countries in their industrializing, burning fossil fuels. Emissions in many countries have stopped increasing but Canada’s emissions continue to rise. In the Global South the peoples least responsible for the emissions are already suffering worse droughts, floods and storms.
Many people are concerned but don’t know what to do about it and don’t talk about it. At Harmony we believe it is important “to talk about it” and to trust that this leads to actions.
