I'm New

What can I expect if I come to a service on Sunday morning?

We hope that one of the things you’ll notice is that this place is welcoming - we really love coming together.  It feels like a weekly family gathering.  During the service, there will be some prayers, music from the choir and some to sing along, and a “sermon.” A sermon is a talk that explores a passage from the Bible and connects it to everyday life. It’s meant to teach, inspire, and offer something to reflect on during the week ahead.

If you like, check out our services online first so you know what it’s like!

Do I have to believe in God to fit in?
The United Church of Canada is well-known for celebrating diversity – including diversity of beliefs. Some in our community say they feel welcome even though they aren’t necessarily certain of their own beliefs. Doubts and questions are not only welcomed but encouraged!

Where would I sit?
We worship “in the round,” all connected in the circle and the circle can always be drawn wider to include whoever wants to join us. I took out the bit about seeing others as this might be a bit intimidating for those who want to subtly check us out
There is no “reserved” seating – every chair is a possibility!

We live-stream our services, but our ushers will help you sit out of range of any cameras if you want.

What should I wear?

We don’t have a dress code – you might see folks in t-shirts and holey jeans (pardon the pun) or dresses, shirts and ties. Honestly, seeing a suit and tie is kind of rare.

Are your church services interesting or boring?

People come to our church services for connection and inspiration. We appreciate Rev. Jim’s thought-provoking reflections - churchy people used to call them “sermons” but don’t be scared off. We also love music and our adult choir offers quality music each Sunday - we promise your ears won’t hurt.

Although there is a general flow to the service each week, we are also very open to exploring alternative expressions of worship, such as drama, music, videos and humour.

Whether you grew up going to church or are a first timer, you’ll be warmly welcomed and soon be feeling at home.

Is there a cost to attending services or activities at Harmony?
There’s no cost to come to services. In fact, our worship services no longer include “passing the plate” to collect offerings – something that was part of many churches for many years! Many people in our community support our church by donating what they can, but please feel no obligation.

A Stewardship Centre at the back of our worship space and our Donate web page provide more information if you decide you want to donate.

Activities outside of worship seldom have an admission or entry fee. You might see “Admission by Donation” on special events, or for some fundraising meals, there may be a cost.

Are my kids welcome at church?
We’re going to be honest about this. The pandemic resulted in far fewer kids in our building – and we really miss them! We would LOVE to see your kids at church.

We have a kind staff member whose job is to host Sunday School activities for children ages 3 and older. Babies and toddlers are also welcome with parents attending to their needs. Please come and see our clean, bright play spaces and let your kids join activities. We also understand that children sometimes move and make noise - don’t worry!  The sound of children just makes our gatherings feel like family.

If your kids are 6+ years, we have a children’s community choir called “Sunset KidsSing” – they sing at services or other events 2 or 3 times a year. Their songs are not specific to Christian messages but inclusive of all kids in our wider community.

What else is there to do besides attend worship services?

Check out our Events page for examples of things our community has going on. If you’re looking for social connections, or a place to contribute to help our city and our world, we want you to feel welcome.

What makes Harmony special?

Those attending Harmony identify our music program, our commitment to being an Affirming Ministry, the strong leadership in our minister and our sense of community. Harmony also is involved in many social and outreach activities.
